The Crisis

Slavery that a family is born into.

It starts small — a loan for a medical bill, a wedding, a bad harvest. A family takes an advance from a brick kiln owner, and in return, agrees to work off the debt making bricks.

But the wages are set by the owner. The interest is set by the owner. The debt almost never shrinks — it grows. When parents grow too old or too sick to work, the balance doesn't disappear. It passes to their children. And their children's children.

This is bonded labor: legally banned in Pakistan since 1992, and yet still the daily reality for millions of families — most of them working at the more than 20,000 brick kilns scattered across the country.

Generations is not unusual for a single family's debt to span — a grandparent's loan still being worked off by their grandchildren.

Meet the families whose lives have been permanently transformed by this mission.

Case 0472

"We have worked at a brick kiln, from sunrise to nightfall, while our four children have never attended school. We long for freedom, education, and a better future for our family, and dream of seeing our children live freely someday, away from the hardship surrounding them."

Case 0511

"My children have never known what freedom is. They work beside us at the brick kiln, continuing our family's fourth generation of slavery. We have endured harsh conditions, longing for education, freedom, and a better future, and enjoying the childhood they deserve, beyond the kiln."

Sanwal, M and Anjali

Case 0533

"We have been in Brickslane, after my husband Ramzan died, leaving me and our daughter. I battle Hepatitis C despite harsh conditions. I seek help to escape brick labor, and support our daughter, and build a better life beyond the kiln."
